2009 MicrobeLibrary Editor's Choice Award Winner: Fruiting Bodies and Mature Basidiospores of the Stalked Puffball Mushroom, Calostoma sp.

Each year the ASM's MicrobeLibrary Visual Collection Editorial Committee presents the Editor's Choice Award to three visual resources (one animation, one still image, and one video) published over the past year. The chosen resources exemplify the criteria for publication in the MicrobeLibrary. The Visual Collection contains high quality, peer-reviewed images, animations, and videos about the microbial world. The awardee for still image submission of the year is:

Fruiting Bodies and Mature Basidiospores of the Stalked Puffball Mushroom, Calostoma sp.
Charida Pukahuta, Aranya Pimmongkol, and Warinee Palasarn, Department of Biological Sciences, Ubon Ratchathani University, Ubon, Ratchatani 34190 Thailand

The image is one of three figures submitted for this resource. An excerpt for this image reads: When the immature mushroom is cut (far left in Fig. 2), the inner white part—the spore mass or gleba—containing young basidiospores and the mycelial mass which develops within a transparent gelatinous material is seen. The far right (Fig. 2) shows a mature fruiting body with a perforated spore case atop a reticulate stalk.
