ASM House 200X200

Special Session on Human Microbiome Livestreaming Free Online from ASM Annual Meeting

A newly added session at the 2012 General Meeting of the American Society for Microbiology will focus on the latest data release by the NIH Human Microbiome Project (HMP).

The HMP has been a five-year endeavor to produce community resources to support the human microbiome field. These activities included characterization of the microbial communities across the human body, evaluation of the associations of microbiomes with specific diseases, building the computational and technical tools needed to analyse the microbiome and evaluating the ethical, legal and societal implications of human microbiome research.

This past week, two major HMP Consortium papers in Nature and a collection of 20+ companion papers in Public Library of Science (PLoS) highlighted a broad analysis of the microbiomes of over 200 healthy adult men and women ā€“ the largest such cohort study to date to focus on the microbiomes across the human body.

The eight invited speakers will showcase the healthy cohort study as well as many other facets of HMP research including microbiome and disease associations studies. The session will close with an audience-participation round table discussion, moderated by ASM President-Elect Jeffrey Miller, on the future needs and directions of the human microbiome field.

WHEN: Tuesday, June 19, 2012, 8:15 a.m. PDT

WHERE: The session, which will be held at the 2012 General Meeting of the American Society for Microbiology at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, will be livestreamed free of charge and can be viewed at http://bit.ly/asm2012hmp.
