An engineered doomsday

Image
In a lead editorial the New York Times argues why the recent research on avian influenza H5N1 should not be published, and why it constitutes a threat to humanity. They get all of the facts wrong, and base their opinions on incorrect science. Among the problems: they flatly state that 600 humans have been infected with H5N1, that the case fatality rate is 50%, and that the mutations selected in the lab probably won't appear in nature. Many people will read this and agree with the Times without knowing that the science argues that this is not a doomsday virus.
