Of the top 10 most blogged articles in 2011 from the Chronicle of Higher Education, one article is on Johne’s disease, a contagious, chronic and sometimes fatal infection that primarily affects the small intestine of cows, sheep and other ruminants. It is caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis.

According to the article "Johne’s disease in livestock is very similar – and possibly even identical – to Crohn’s disease in people, which currently afflicts an estimated 500,000 sufferers in North America alone. And the big, dirty secret of today’s industrial dairy and meat producers is that animals suffering from flagrant Johne’s disease currently provide milk and meat directly to the American consumer."
