Extended spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL's) are enzymes that enable bacteria to resist multiple antibiotics. In the past few years ESBL-producing enteric bacteria (such as E. coli) have become an increasingly common cause of community acquired infections worldwide. The source of these organisms in the community still remains unclear; however, recent reports link wild animals and water reservoirs to their spread. Patrice Nordmann, MD, Hosp. de Bicetre, Le Kremlin Bicetre, France, presents research showing 8 percent of the enteric bacteria isolated from Miami Beach seagulls were positive for ESBL productionsuggesting these birds play a role in disseminating these bacteria in the environment.
