Health authorities are carefully watching the Southern Hemisphere, where the winter flu season is just beginning. Because much of the seasonal H1N1 human flu circulating there last year was resistant to the antiviral drug Tamiflu, scientists fear the swine flu may pick up the resistance gene and become more difficult to treat.
