IFITM3 is seen to be essential in defending the host against influenza A virus in vivo. Mice lacking Ifitm3 displayed fulminant viral pneumonia vs. wild type; protection was achieved by re-introduction of Ifitm3. They also found clinical correlation using genotype analysis with influenza virus load. IFITM3 may strongly alter the course of influenza virus infection in mice and humans.
