Gut microbes: silent partners in liver metabolism

A recent boom in research on the gut microbiota is revealing that these communities are even more integral to human health than previously thought. And now a study published in mBio yesterday draws more links between gut microbes and metabolism. Colonizing the guts of germ-free mice with bacteria stimulated significant changes in the metabolic profiles of the urine, plasma, liver, kidney and colon. Mice undergoing colonization also upped their expression of major drug metabolizing enzymes in the liver, including Cyp3a11, one of the most active drug metabolism cytochromes in mice.
