Multiple viruses have been linked to ME/CFS suggesting that multiple pathogens cause the same disease or several diseases with core signs and symptoms. Or if you are on Team XMRV /MuLV - a retrovirus could be the mastermind. No matter how you slice it in science, questions beget theories which beget research which begets questions which beget more theories....
Drs. A Martin Lerner and Safedin Beqaj posit that ME/CFS patients have elevated serum immunoglobulin (Ig)G serum antibody titers to EBV, HCMV, and HHV6, but there is no herpesvirus DNA-emia, herpesvirus antigenemia, or uniformly elevated IgM serumantibody titers to the complete virions. We propose that herpesvirus EBV, HCMV, and HHV6 immediate- early gene expression in ME/CFS patients leads to host cell dysregulation and host cell apoptosis without lytic herpesvirus replication.
Is this possible? Is it an avenue for further exploration?
