P. marneffei is endemic to Southeast Asia, where it is one of the more common HIV-related opportunistic infections. Penicillium spp. are known to cause penicilliosis, which usually affects immunocompromised individuals such as those with AIDS, or undergoing chemotherapy. P. marneffei is normally acquired though inhalation of airborne spores.
