While almost every lab has a small toolbox with some screwdrivers, pliers, and such, here are some tools that may not have obvious utility at the bench, but could make your life easier. Jode Plank, a Postdoctoral Fellow studying DNA repair at the University of California at Davis shares some of his hardware store lab equipment including his unique method for removing bubbles from agar plates (a la creme brulee) and how to avoid the “The Walk of Shame” when the liquid nitrogen knob gets stuck.
