This new 2010 paper from the Journal of Environmental Quality takes a closer look at the presence of a pathogenic amoeba, Naegleria fowleri, in drinking water from various wells and at different times of year from the Phoenix, Arizona area. It was previously determined that the contamination of a ground water well in Phoenix was responsible for the deaths of two children in Arizona of primary amoebic meningoencephalitis cause by N. fowleri. The authors of this paper sampled wells throughout Phoenix and identified a new link between the bacterial community of the water in the well in relation to the presence or absence of N. fowleri amoeba.
