Proof of swine flu's split personality is out

We've long been warned of swine flu's split personality: mild in most cases, but severe in a few. Now the figures are bearing this out.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 282 people under 18 died in the H1N1 flu pandemic in the US, between its start in April 2009 and 9 January 2010. This means that swine flu's death toll of under-18s is already four times higher than the average killed in recent years by flu during normal flu seasons.
