Image
And the debate rages on. We've posted several articles in recent months that have both said that strep is and isn't a cause for such disorders as OCD and/or tic syndromes like Tourette's. However it appears that the final word is still unclear. Here's a new article claiming, "the case for strep throat-induced mental illness grows stronger."

Some children seem to acquire behaviors associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) after being infected with the Streptococcus bacterium, but for decades skeptics have claimed the connection is nothing but a coincidence. Now a new study in mice offers compelling evidence that strep can indeed affect the mind.

  1. why would strep cause OCD. I don't see any relation between the two.
  2. Thanks for the comment. According to the article (click "source" read) it has to do with the antibodies produced by the body in reaction to strep. These antibodies have been shown to still be present in the blood once strep has been cleared from our systems. And in animals they are seeing deposits of these antibodies left in the brain. Check out the article and search for the others, using keywords, that we have posted here on the site to get a more complete vision of what might be going on with strep and the mind.
