The ASM Public Communications Award, sponsored by ASM, recognizes outstanding achievement in increasing public awareness, knowledge and understanding of microbiology. Microbiology is concerned with issues such as the environment, prevention and treatment of infectious diseases, laboratory and diagnostic medicine, and food and water safety, among others.
Eligibility is limited to primary authors of information concerning the microbiological sciences appearing in mass media, including print (newspapers and periodicals only) and broadcast media readily available to the general public. Books, websites, and institutionally sponsored publications are not eligible. Individual items and series are both eligible. International entries are accepted but must be translated into English prior to submission.
The award consists of a $2,500 cash prize, a commemorative plaque, and travel expenses to attend the ASM General Meeting for presentation of the award.
All nominations must be received by January 31 for work published or aired during the preceding calendar year. Deadline cannot be extended.
