Study: Strep Throat Doesn't Cause OCD and Tourette's

New research may calm fears that the common infection strep throat can lead to certain neuropsychiatric disorders.

While previous research has linked streptococcal infection of the throat to Tourette syndrome and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), a new study out of the United Kingdom finds no significant link.

In a study comparing 255 people with OCD and Tourette syndrome to over 4,500 people without the conditions, researchers found people with Tourette syndrome or OCD were no more likely to have had possible strep infections than people without the neuropsychiatric conditions at two years and five years after diagnosis.
