Assortment in colony biofilms

van Gestel et al BILD.jpg
Effect of founder cell density on the spatial pattern formation in colony biofilms.
The colony biofilms were obtained by following the protocol described in van Gestel et al (2014) ISME Journal (doi: 10.1038/ismej.2014.52). Briefly, GFP and mKATE2 labeled Bacillus subtilis strain were mixed in 1:1 ratio, diluted 10, 100, 1000, 10000, and 100000 fold (left to right) and spotted on agar plate that promotes the development of highly structured colony biofilms (2xSG medium solidified with 1.5% agar). The GFP and mKATE2 labeled strains were detected using AxioZoom V16 Microscope (Zeiss) with appropriate filters for green and red fluorescence. The detected GFP and mKATE derived signal is pseudo-colored to yellow and blue, respectively.
