Shingles Vaccine Coverage Remains Low

Vaccination for shingles was around 16% in 2011 among those at the greatest risk for the disease, researchers reported here.

Although rates of vaccination against the herpes zoster virus among patients 60 and older grew more than 2.5-fold from 2008 to 2011 (OR 2.62, 95% CI 2.25-3.04), the proportion of patients who reported having been vaccinated in 2011 only represented 15.8% of those in that age group, according to Melissa Johnson, PharmD, of Duke University Medical Center, and colleagues.

The marked increase shows that "we're doing a good job about starting to get people vaccinated," but that U.S. coverage of the vaccine remains relatively low despite Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommendations for vaccination in that patient population, Johnson said at the Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy.
