Tonight the Seattle Sounders FC, a Major League Soccer team, take the field against FC Barcelona, soccer's world champion. The real enemy for both teams, however, is malaria. Joining forces with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the teams have planned a special match that includes messages about malaria broadcast on the big screens in the stadium.
The Foundation will soon roll-out a malaria-awareness campaign that includes text messages and online education efforts that encourage viewers to "pass the ball". Seattle locals are also getting into the game, with one glassblower creating a unique FC Barcelona piece to be auctioned off with the proceeds going to foundations that combat malaria.
