SheepStanley Prusiner finds evidence that disease can be caused by a class of infectious proteins he calls prions. These abnormal proteins cause scrapie, a fatal neurodegenerative disease of sheep. Prusiner is awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology in 1997.
